On Make-Believe
Mackendrick prepared a small number of student handouts that deal with subjects broadly relating to theatre history, mythology, anthropology and storytelling, as drawn from his reading of Robert Graves, Margaret Alice Murray, Claude Lévi-Strauss, William Robertson Smith, Edward Burnett Tylor and others. Arthur Elam Haigh’s The Attic Theatre, Allardyce Nicoll’s The Development of the Theatre, and most importantly Margarete Bieber’s The History of the Greek and Roman Theater were Mackendrick’s key sources for his notes on Greek theatre and the evolution of theatrical performance spaces. Here is a version of his handout entitled On Make-Believe.
